So you've decided to get into woodworking — welcome! The sheer number of tools can be overwhelming. I started with a handful of basic tools in a single-car garage 25 years ago. Here are the 10 I recommend.
1. A Quality Tape Measure
Measure twice, cut once. Recommended: Stanley PowerLock 25ft Tape Measure
2. A Combination Square
For marking lines, checking angles, setting depths. Recommended: Irwin Tools Combination Square
3. A Circular Saw
Handles rip cuts, crosscuts, and angle cuts before you invest in a table saw. Recommended: DEWALT 7-1/4-Inch Circular Saw
4. A Random Orbital Sander
Better finish without swirl marks. Recommended: DEWALT Random Orbital Sander
5. Sharp Chisels
For joints, paring, mortises. Start with 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1 inch. Recommended: Narex Woodworking Chisels Set
6. Cordless Drill/Driver
Drilling, driving screws, and more. Get 18V+. Recommended: DEWALT 20V MAX Drill/Driver Kit
7. Clamps
You can never have enough. Start with four 12-inch and four 24-inch bar clamps. Recommended: BESSEY Trigger Clamps
8. A Block Plane
Trimming, easing edges, fitting joints. Recommended: Stanley Block Plane
9. A Miter Saw
Accurate crosscuts and angle cuts. Recommended: DEWALT 10-Inch Miter Saw
10. Safety Gear
Essential: 3M Safety Glasses, 3M WorkTunes Hearing Protector, and 3M Respirator. Wood dust is a serious health hazard.
